Optimist Week 4 - I have feelings about it

Well I haven't been the best and keeping up on this. The flip side to that is my absence has really alotted for a lot off deep introspection into this process and behaviors in general surrounding food.

What I can say honestly is I am still fucking starving for food, both in my gut and in my brain.
I was thinking about this on my commute home (which by the way is where I do all my best thinking) and here is what I came up with:

  • Not eating real food for a long period of time is totally and absolutely unnatural so I am going to stop giving myself grief about being hungry and thinking of food.

  • My unhealthy habits surrounding food have developed from a couple different things, and separating myself from food has given me some an opportunity to think about that (I will expand on this in a sec.)

  • While I feel like this program really works, I do have some feelings about what it represents (and when do I not have feelings about things? Never. I am 100% a scorpio)
So, before I dive into all my feelings and thoughts on the above, lets chat about this week.
I did awesome considering what I went through in the last 6 days of my life.
But I did eat a piece of mushroom pizza on Saturday night.

I have decided not to feel bad about it, which leads me to the talk about feelings....

So, first off one thing some people might not know about me is I grew up in a very unconventional circumstance surrounding food in my youth, that helped to shape the person I am in some ways.
My dad is a very controlling person. He himself has some pretty deep rooted issues surrounding control and food, that I do not think he will ever admit to in his life due to his inability to self reflect...because in his mind he is never wrong.

Growing up in my house looked like:
  • Depravation from specific foods just because my dad kept himself at the top of the hierarchy and that meant he got the specific foods that were part of this depravation plan from the rest of the family. We did not have a lot of money, although I am not really certain that we were kept from these foods due to funds. I truly believe that it was about control, because control is my dad's middle name. This depravation has lead me in my adult life to covet several foods and put them on a pedestal in my mind. Breakfast foods like eggs, hash browns, bacon, certain sweets, chicken breasts, avocados, cheese.... all the things my dad held for himself and not the rest of the family
  • Soda's were counted and that meant if you drank one it was known and there was verbal abuse that followed. Ironically I don't currently have an obsession with soda, but for many many years I kept a case of Diet Coke in my trunk because I drank 4-6 cans of it a day.
  • Food was portioned and counted so much so it was known if you ate too much of anything... and you got into trouble. Again, this was always under the guise of money was tight, but I do not really believe that was the sole cause of this
Growing up I dreamed of the day I could eat breakfast with potatoes and bacon and not have to wonder why I was eating discount cereal and powdered milk while I smelled bacon cooking for someone else. I dreamed about the day I could go to a fast food restaurant and order something other than 1 .99 cent item, while my dad ate 3-5 items, but I also went through a phase of being so under the thumb of the dictatorship I lived in, that my dad's voice got really loud in my mind. Before I knew it I was not good enough, or thin enough, or smart enough.... I began to starve myself until I could not anymore, then would binge and purge and get in trouble for eating foods that were not supposed to be eaten until I moved out of the house.

Once I moved, when I could afford to I would treat myself to whatever I wanted and it was glorious! Smoothies, bagels, bacon avocado cheeseburgers. I would make one my favorite child hood meals that I would most often get the drumstick and not the breast for: chicken breast bbq shake and bake, corn, and rice a roni and I never had to portion myself. I could eat all the tuna helper I wanted! All The egg rolls I wanted... It took several years to catch up to me.

I really did not see a big weight uptake until I was about 20 years old. But I was still young, and still thin so I was not even thinking about it really.

At 21 I got pregnant and once my daughter was born, I pretty much fed her a similar way to the way I grew up minus the depravation. Lots of food from boxes, bags, and cans.

Once I got into my late 20's I started to really learn about food and recognize my eating habits were way out wack. I started eating things my dad would never dream about letting in our house like spinach and was loving this new change. unfortunately my genetics and probably my previous programing was catching up to me and it was more noticeable to me by this point. I began to make my way into the body shame spiral.

The voice of my dad was still loud and proud in my head and I started the yoyo diet process that has lead my life up to today, in addition to surfing the highs and lows of anxiety and depression on and off until I was about 38 years old.

This yo yo diet process leads to me the second half of my feelings conversation:

Diet Culture. One of the most damaging thing to women that I can think of.
Diet Culture in the primary reason I have what I think is an unhealthy relationship to food because I have been on so many diets for so long, it is so hard to separate food from the "Good Food" "Bad Food" association in my mind.

Diet culture is the reason this program was invented. Its the reason I cried ashamed of myself after I ate 1 single piece of mushroom pizza because I got busy, and was off track with my product schedule and I had not eaten in weeks any real food.
In fact diet culture is the reason I chose that piece of pizza. It was easy to snag, easy to hide while I scarfed it down.

Diet culture is the reason that I feel terrible when I think about how much I miss real food and how I cannot wait to eat it.

Diet culture is the reason I need to loose this weight and went on this program in the first place.

I am not saying I do not take responsibility for my actions. I absolutely do. But I also know how deep the thought process is rooted in the brains of millions. I know this culture creates a lucrative business for many people, including nestle, the makers of optifast.

So... I have conflicted feelings about this whole process at this point. One one hand, I am grateful for the opportunity and experience this program offers because I did need to hit the reset button, and loose a significant amount of weight as a jumping off point on a path to improved health.
On the other hand I hate that this program exists and what it insinuates that we need is to take a break from food because we are too fat to deserve to eat and that's the only way we have to get better...and that feeling starving all the time is what we need to endure.

I wonder how many other people on this program are really thinking about this. I bet not a lot as a fat person for almost 20 year now, I know the stigma and the shame that is placed on us for being fat by society.

Everyone from your co-workers, to your friends, to your family thinks they have an answer for you, thinks they have perspective on your situation that you don't know. Thinks they can cure if you, if you can only have the will power....

Everyone just assumes you are so unhappy as a fat person and that being skinny is the yellow brick road to happiness and a better life, so much so that 9 out of 10 fat people have bought that same narrative hook, line, and sinker.
I have had the benefit of really being able to do some deep work over the last 4 years to help me to realize just how untrue that narrative really is. I have loved myself and been happy at my largest weight to date. Worn a bikini and a fuck you with rolls and cellulite out and have not feel bad about it for a second.

But I still made a choice to loose wright because I felt pain in my body, and I really longed to do physical things I just wasn't capable of. I think what the real kicker is that I had to return to the dark side to achieve it. Im grateful for the ability and the opportunity to do what I want, but I don't love that this is the way that it has to get done.

Open Letter

Not optifast related

It's funny how the little things remind me of you and I instantly think about telling you, then my stomach drops out and I realize damn I'm really never going to see you again.  Like never, ever. So many words are left unspoken.
I usually tell you things like this in a private Facebook message,  but I know your mom reads them, and at this point I'm starting to feel bad about them.

Today I saw this cute porch all arranged with multi colored lights. I immediately thought of us and how much we would have loved to have that porch to just chill and smoke on, or just how much we would love it now to talk and catch up on.
I looked down to text you on my phone, and it was then I remembered.

I miss you.

Optifast end of week 2

Well 2nd week is hardest.
I'm beginning to sympathize with my dog and Ethiopian children on the feed the world commercials.
I'm hungry all the time, and I think about food often.

I have cheated by eating small amounts of food a few times this week and coming clean to my family was really hard.

I feel like a complete failure.

My husband wants me to talk about my challenges in my group and I'm too embarrassed too.

Hopefully next week will be better.

End of Week 1 on Optifast at Kaiser

I made it through week 1!!! Last night a I was thinking about this I was like dude, I am  a bad ass bitch for getting through 7 days of this program. Now I totally realize there is probably like a million other things that are actually harder, but SERIOUSLY. Eating 800 calories a day only of things that come from powders or bars is really an accomplishment on any scale, especially if you can keep it up over any stretch of time.

This week I lost 6 pounds. When I say this in my head as I type it sounds like wah wah wah 6 pounds. And really that is because my inner anorexic had her heart set on 10 pounds. But also if I step back and look at this objectively, 6 pounds is more weight then I have ever lost in an entire week. Now, I did low key wear the lightest clothing I could find for the weigh in, but I really can honestly say I doubt the 6 pounds is contributed by my lack of heavy clothing.... This is just yet again another diet culture mind game developed probably somewhere around the time I did weight watchers in the early 2000s.

To sum up, part of me is bummed, logical me knows this is a significant weight loss for one week, then the emotionally stable part of me is like "numbers on a scale don't matter friend you made it through the week that is all that matters."

Hopefully they all get on the same page at some point, we shall see.

Today in class we talked about SMART goals and smarty pants me was like OMG duh everyone knows what these are if they work in the business world.... why such basic info Optifast?
But then i found myself quickly declaring I was not even going to THINK about making long term goals until the end of week three, because 800 calories a day be hard bitch. Can i get an amen?
I say that as I just left a class where when first asked how my week went I replied with "It went Fine I had a few struggles but I am ok" to then really identifying with another person 2 minutes later that was more honest about the struggle then me so.... I think the person answering the how was your week was optimistic me.

In any event I decided my SMART goal for this week is just to get through each day with no cheats.
(I can go to sleep and dream about all the food I want as long as I do not eat any in the day)
My rewards for my stellar behavior will be the following:
*Hot Tub Tea Time with the Hubs
*Pedicure with my kiddo

So that is where I am at. I believe I can do it because, hey I made it through this week. Wish me luck.

Week 1 of the Optifast Journey

I want other people out there thinking about this program or starting it to find some honest thoughts and feelings about it, and I need to journal so I'm going to do my best to not my thoughts down weekly.

Well, here I am day 5 and here is what's going through my mind today.

-Real talk? I'm fucking hungry but not for the things I thought I would be, instead I'm craving poached eggs with sauteed mushrooms spinach and toast, Tuna Salad, or a nice lettuce wrapped burger. What has been awesome is my husband is so awesomely supportive I tell him every thought and every craving and he is there for me.

-I don't think I am going to post before and after pictures or claim any weight loss success publicly. I'm not here for that, and it's not what I stand for. This is the first time in my life that I am truly loosing this weight for me. I'm committed to this to feel better, be able to do more, and to heal my relationship with food. I know as a fat person for almost 20 years the damage of being on the opposite side of declarations and before and afters is, & also I do not subscribe to the ideas of less weight equals happiness or success or acceptance.
It doesn't. I'm happy now. I'm actually better mentally now then ever, I'm just in pain, and I recognize that I have had a unhealthy attachment to food for as long as I can remember and I want to heal.

-Taking in a ton of fluid is hard, and I've found ways to get around that somewhat but I do find myself wondering am I letting my food attachment side swipe it's way in? I don't know.

-My dog is saving my life right now. She helps me get through. Snuggles and petting her is literally like artificial dopamine. I'm grateful.

-I have my teenage eating disorder thoughts creeping in. (Asking myself what I can do to loose 10lbs a week etc)
The good news is I'm aware of them, and I engage in an internal dialogue with myself to shut them down.

-when i was eating,  the block of time this program lasts seemed small, today it seems infinite. I keep a picture in my mind of what I will be able to do physically at the end of this to keep me going.

I have 3 more days till my first check in and i am curious to see my results and what the next week looks like.

So long, farewell, Auf Wiedersehen, goodbye....

This is the only space I have to say, I'm relieved you are gone.
I am relieved you cannot hurt them anymore...
You were selfish, you were cruel, you were the one that ruined it all.

I'm glad you cannot taint that little baby anymore.
I pray no one else will either.

I don't mourn you. I never liked you.

It might not be zen of me to feel however I feel, not to light a candle for you so you can find your way, to not be all peaceful and believe you lived a path that was meant to teach you a lesson. That you are healed and divine now...

The day you left was a gift. I don't care if you find your way.

Overwhelmed

Everyday the struggle is real, to get out of the house. To face what the world has for me today... Will it be great? Will it be terrible? will it be overwhelming?

its a fear that no one really understands. It's something I wish I knew how to let go of.
I am so afraid, I'm not smart, or good enough.... or that somehow I will make everything a mess.

My life on most days would be easier spent in my blanket tent where I can be safe and finally rest, because my mind is so fatigued.

Even though this all about that - I am going to practice something by replacing the rest of the page with some really positive things from my past. things that when I look back at them.... they make me feel safe, and loved, and good enough.

  • Singing together while the house got cleaned or dinner was prepared
  • Singing in the car ride on the way home
  • Listening to America while driving in the RV
  • Summer beach days with burgers and baby oil
  • The promise of a place and time for us
  • The promise that no mountain was ever high enough
  • hearing you were ready for me
  • munchkin
  • dinners with you, and leftovers for home
  • long talks especially late into the night
  • Pizzelles
  • Softball
  • Cars and eight tracks
  • hugs
  • holy water at the entrance at church
  • late night christmas wrapping sessions

Enough

Do you ever just get a certain point in something and it's the last straw? It might not even be as big as other things you have dealt with but it was just like a splash of cold water and suddenly you just wake up from the rationalizations, or excuses and are just like FUCK THAT.

I feel like I just hit that point today. Granted I am a lot more in tune with my inner fuck you than usual because of shark week, busy week, back handed compliments from family .... but here I am just living my life, and minding my own business and then bam like a bolt of lightening it just happened.

I have always been the person to take care of everyone else, to be there for everyone else, to DEVOTE AND SACRIFICE MY ENTIRE LIFE FOR EVERYONE ELSE....

To be not good enough for some one else.
And you know what? I'm fucking done. The end.

Why do have to be anything other than who and what I am.... or why should I have to feel bad for who and what I am?

Why can't I just be? Why can't I just be accepted for what is and loved for that even?
Why am I settling for less than that? I should not be. All of a sudden it just hit me, and I was like fuck that. Life is too short.

waves

I feel like I am in the low part of the tide today. Its quiet, there is a wide bank of sand.... but I can hear the storm and the waves in the distance...

I am really working hard to hold it all together.
Last week was a whirlwind of emotions. It's hard to be on the brink of emotional shut down and look like all is well on the outside.

I will be traveling again this week, then resuming life as usual the following week... I will be seeing a holistic doctor next week, and working on starting therapy soon. I hope it all helps. I really long to have some silence right now; some relief.

Its hard to be on the brink of panic all the time.

I wish I could stay locked up here in my warm and comfortable house while the rain pours down outside. Here I know mostly what to expect. Here is my place. Here is where my people are.

I just want to feel safe and happy again.

The Bear... The whole fucking field of bears

I just realized that whenever I write it is mostly just to get things out.
I like to talk things out, even if no one is on the receiving end of this conversation.

I am in a dark cloud that is suspended over a field of ferocious bears.
Everything in my life is terrifying and causes me to have heart palpitations, okay well not EVERYTHING.... but almost.

Being sad and anxious ( I know first world problems...) is just the absolute worst ever.
There are a million times a day I just want to hide under a tent of blankets in the darkest corner of a room and not ever face the world again. There a thousand moments in a day that I am convinced that I am about to fuck up my life, everyone else's life, my job, my everything.

The plot lines that live in my mind are those of self absorbed disaster strikes big screen type movies. It's like every fucking situation is my own personal San Andres thriller about to happen minus the popcorn and the rock.....

I don't know what to do. I don't know when or if it will ever end.... it's fucking exhausting, and infuriating, because the reality is my life is not bad, there are a lot of great things in my life and amazing people.....
But when I try to tell the panic within, it's like somehow my heart and my mind are not getting the memo....
Like a broke down line of communication within myself... it's like I am communicating reality vs anxiety and sadness through a tin can and string phone system, when what I really need is a fucking CELL PHONE.

I wish it would stop. I hope that it stops. No matter how much I tell myself to breathe, that it is all only feelings, and that there really are no bears there, and no dark clouds.... the feelings remain. My heart still pounds. My throat still gets dry, I still fidget like a 3 year old child that just got told to sit still, my inner instinct is screaming inside my head.... RUN... GET IN THE CAR.... TURN THE MUSIC LOUD, ROLL THE WINDOWS DOWN, JUST GET THE HELL OUTTA DODGE! Drive into the sunset, away from the buildings and into the forest...... Run, run, run..... or hide under the blankets in the darkest corner you can find.

Fuck.

pounds of me on that little blog No one reads...

I have spent the better half of the last 24 months trying to squeeze myself back into my former 160 lbs box.
Right now I'm starting to feel like all of that is a bunch of complete bullshit.
I keep seeing all these extremely brave plus size girls come into their own by embracing their bodies..
Cannot help but think how brave they all are...
Listening to fat girl walking today, and she was talking about a project she did where she had sex with her husband everyday for a year to get herself comfortable with her own body. What a revolutionary concept! Not sure I could pull that project off.....
But I saw another one today from yoursmeley that I can try.
Lord knows I need to start somewhere,  absolutely no sense in waiting anymore time to like myself more and loathe myself less.....

215 pounds of......
Me as I am
A mother and wife
A friend
A soul
36 years of living and learning
Stretch marks that tell a story
Sacrifice and lack thereof
Love.

Stories

I have spent a good deal of time in my new career journey beating myself up.

I have all these stories in my head that I have been beating down like flies

"you are not good enough"
"you are not smart enough"
"you don't know what you are doing"
" you have to make x amount of money in order to live"
"you are not going to make it"

Lately it has been a struggle to keep the ugly ness at bay.

I had to reconnect myself to my landmark teachings in order to reground myself again and sit with simba on the cliff over looking the playa.

Isn't it funny that no matter how much time has passed or how old you get these things never stop existing...

I am grateful however for mostly putting to rest the whole what is my life I am old and do not have my shit together conversation.

I feel like my inner child has taken over that dialogue, bursting in uninvited and un-announced screaming to have fun, be creative, color!!!!

I think this must be the same inner child that manifested the adult coloring book. I need to get one of those by the way..

Sigh, i don't have any idea where I am going, but I know where I have been; and I know I want to color and play.

That about sums it up folks.

Breathing into possibility......

As the time inches closer to this new opportunity I feel the fear creeping up inside. It is an everyday battle to feel the fear, feel the doubt, feel the insecurity, and remain calm. remain in the clearing.

I see that big old desert sprawling up ahead of me and that self doubt nags from behind.
I have to constantly keep in check. I know what I am doing. I know it is the right thing for me right now... but all the doubts and negative voices don't leave.

I just keep steadying my breath. Being present to the gratitude for this moment... sitting in a rain storm in the middle of July... in a house I own, celebrating my child's birthday.

I remind myself I have notoriously told myself for years that I am less then I am; and the despite everything I have overcome, I have done a bunch of things I never imagined I could. I am a place I never imagined I would ever be.... and that I can continue that, I will be, do, and grow in ways I have never imagined I could.

I remind myself, that no matter what happens... I will be ok. I am a survivor. I am a warrior. I am smart. I am capable. I can do whatever I set my mind to. The only thing that matters is what I believe, what I think, and what I do.

I pray, to stay in this train of thought. To never let my inner fears and old self take the wheel again, and that god/the universe/that higher power above is watching over me. Will give me strength when I am weak, will guide me in the directions I am meant to walk, will fill my heart with love, gratitude, and grace everyday...

Stay in this place. stay in this place.

checking off vision board items

Sitting here with my daughter on her birthday and I am realizing the gravity of the choices I have recently made. This year the top priorities on my list were more time for family/family first, more fun, and finding a means of income that better serves my life and priorities.

I'm about to start working in a completely different environment for the first time in over 8 years.
I am both afraid and elated at the possibility.
When I look ahead I feel like Mufasa & Symba on the the big cliff over looking the entire world. I can hear that deep voice saying "everything the light touches is ours" except on my vast desert of possibilities before me I see visions of happy little day dreams and imaginings of things that will live in my future possibility.

I know it sounds totally and completely cheeze ball, but this is how I imagine it. The open space ahead of me, and the voice on my shoulder saying don't be afraid,  you are smart, you are amazing,  you will be awesome....

No matter what happens from here, I feel in my core that the path ahead is the path I need to go down.
The road less traveled is the road for me.

I'm excited to live my life. To enjoy my family.  To learn and experience new things. To be challenged.

This is the beginning of my second stage of major growth. I can feel it.

So much

Ah so much has happened and I have definitely not kept this writing thing up to the level I feel "I should." Life get's busy, I start things and forget them... sometimes I pick them up again, other times not so much.

I have been pretty busy and introspective lately. I started an online class, partially to see if I really want to pursue this whole nutrition/holistic/I want to help people thing.... Partially to see if I can do it and quiet those nay saying whispers of my own mind.

I have been attempting to journal more, started listening to a book instead of rocking out in all my free time in the car, I lost a friend, and am sending my kid off to high school soon. Those last two things have been occupying quite a bit of my mind the last couple weeks.

Life is strange, and beautiful, and tragic. People are surprising. I'm trying to be more mindful of the moments in life, and soak them in. I am trying to be more mindful of the people in life and not forget them, or be too busy with all the doing that distracts me.

I really feel like I have been reconnecting with my spiritual self, soft of relaxing into my own ideas about god or "the universe" and how I perceive it.

I've been in a folksy place in terms of music when I have listened lately. I have been tuning into a lot of country, 60's folk, & Joni Mitchell. Part of me wonders if I am getting soft and old, the other part of me is assuming I am trying to grasp on to what I really want and the transition into a new phase of my life.

I think I am at a time where I am still someone's mom, but as more time will pass I will begin to transition more into also who I am, what I want.... I'm not leaving the mom title behind in the process, I think it is just shifting to a different meaning. It's all sort of bittersweet.

I also am planning to go to Italy in two years with my friend. This is the first time I talked about an adventure, and actually took active steps to make it real. It's exhilarating, exciting, and scary all at the same time.

I cannot believe it is already summer.... as I sit her at my desk and look up at my vision board there are only a few things that still belong there as my central focus - the other's I don't know what the hell I was thinking in January...  I feel like the last two years, since I began to create this vision board, this has always sort of been the case.... either I am totally A.D.D. (would explain a lot!) or time does strange things.... it reveals the truth.

As I contemplate this I am reminded the person that first introduced me to this process is my deceased friend's sister who is also my friend.... gives me a little pang of sadness. It's crazy how little things, snippets of time, and small conversations can have such an effect on you. It is even crazier to me that we often fail to see these things until we are forced to look.

So..... relevant things still on the vision board:

Loose 25 lbs (actually 30)
Low impact exercise 3 times a week
Maintain healthy eating habits
find a way to create income that serves my life better and creates more freedom.
More fun - travel, concerts, friends, & family
simplify your routine
save more $$ for the future
family 1st
Keep your priorities straight, put your family and your spiritual life first.

I'm doing awesome at some of these, it is amazing some of the things that have manifested and how much I have strengthened my own ability to just say yes.... some of these need work.

One thing that weighs heavy on my mind is priorities straight. Especially with the loss of my friend so close in the distance. I am really working on not leading my decisions with money, and prioritizing happiness and family first.... not as easy as it sounds; defiantly a work in progress...

I feel like I always say shit like this. I say I need to do, I'm working on.... I'm constantly in progress here on this blog and in life. I'm so annoyed by the ridiculousness of it; and at the same time accepting that this is just the process.

I guess I just gotta keep on..... holding the vision. Trusting the process... and being grateful

I am really going to try to keep writing more often. I feel as though I write about absolutely nothing, and for zero purpose other then it is healing for me to process my thoughts independent of my own mind.

Material Consumption

Today I was walking by some sunglasses and I couldn't resist the idea of buying them. One they were on sale. Two they were a brand I love, Kate Spade. I started to mentally dissect this whole being in love with a brand thing, but then became busy and forgot my analysis.
Later I pass a work out top that says "Spiritual Gangster" and I thought that's me, I need to buy that.
later I stop to look at the tag and contemplate if the 48 dollar price tag is worth it.
then I thought,  would a true Spiritual gangster wear a t shirt that cost her 48 dollars just to say she is? Probably not.

I start to imagine the sad retired shoppers I see sometimes as much as every day, and how I am always quick to point out that it won't be me someday.  Wasting away my retirement at the mall.

I start to think about the rate of my own consumption. New eye shadow check. New lipstick check. New t shirt and tank. Check, check.
and that is just tallying up my week.

What is it I love about shopping?  What is it we all do? The rush we get getting an awesome deal, or a item that just makes us feel good. It's like a drug deal on a street corner. It's like a comment or a like on a social media post.

Consumption has become faster and more instantly gratifying then ever. For most it's a quick click on the phone. Amazon.com buy with one click. We love that shit.

We click without a second thought.

How often though,  do we:
Look away from the homeless
pause at donation to charity or turn to something else
Look away rather then get involved

I always say I love what I do but I would love to just help people.
Often I get a funny sideways glance in response.

I can't help but wonder if we stopped clicking and started caring if the dopamine rush is the same. If it is maybe better?

I feel like I am inching slowly away from consumption addiction. You can't run from it like a burning building when it is a part of every molecule you are. But, after all my thinking I am going to try to click less, care more.
I am going to work to send that vibration off into the world.
If everyone else did too.... I wonder what might happen

Adulthood doesn't equal the death of your soul

Last week I went on a hike and as we were passing by some early 1900's vacation cabin's I was pointing out the ones I felt drawn to. I was creating and telling little stories about how one day I would own one and live in the little forest by the city.

As I went on with my little tale my husband snorted and kind of brushed off my fantasy with a loud exhale and my inner child got her panties in a wad and thought, he just doesn't get me.

The truth is, it had been a trying week or so and it was filled with other adults giving me well meaning advice about being practical & logical; while dismissing my day dreams and fantasies  & I was just tiered of hearing it.

I feel so out of place sometimes in the big old adult world. Here I am, miss over sharer, self expressed, dreamer.
My big mouth likes to loudly proclaim my inner thoughts, feelings, and all my big dreams to the world while I get eye rolls, & logical and practical advice in return.

Sometimes too much adulthood deflates me like a balloon.
Other times I sit back and reflect, on the reactions and the words I receive and I feel sad for all those logical responsible adults out there.
I quietly agree with my inner self instead, that I do not want to be that way.

The only times I hate who I am is when the adults out there wake the adult inside me that tries to belittle and suppress the dreaming, bleeding heart, self expressed, sappy ass hippie dippie lover inside of me..... and I hate that.

I like leading my life with my heart & dreaming up fantasy realities where I can grow an entire organic garden beside my earth ship on the mountain by the sea, in my homemade tie dye threads, while listening to my records powered by my solar panels even though I cannot even keep an aloe vera plant alive.

Some of that shit might never happen, but you know what? Some of that shit IS going to happen, and it will be rad when it does.

If there is one thing I have learned, and keep learning as the people I know live practical lives until they get sick and die, it's this:

We all have to live right now. We don't have to leave our souls and our hearts at the edge of adulthood, and dreaming is not just ok, it's awesome.

Chew on that.

Are we there yet?

So after what seems like an eternity I decided to come back here for inspiration.

I am thinking about starting back up on my professional blog

www.love-is-beauty.com again, I really do not know why I made excuses to fall to the wayside.

In addition, I am also considering another professional project with a friend.

I often ask myself why I decide to pile up the wish list projects in order to fill my deep well of a soul.... and why I always give up on myself, or grow weary of the do list to get to things...

I think it all boils deep down to belief in myself and better time management skills! HA!

Everyday of my life feels as though it ought to be at least six hours longer (says the girl who loves sleep and took a two hour nap today!)

I have too many projects I want started, too many classes I want to take, too many places I want to go, and too much stuff I just really NEED to do.

Ironically what I am doing is low, low, low on the list.  It's a funny thing to do what is needed to survive, yet feel completely compelled to identify yourself as the profession.

There is something about what I do that just sucks me in, has a grip on my soul.

And then there is that awesome thing called money. yeah that has me too. Wouldn't it just be so amazing to give money the finger and live free and clear?

Live solely on your desires and your passions. Breathe in life, breathe in love, and just live, live, live?

That's the dream.... now on to the drawing board. the question is can I get there?

Stages of grief, & the year I grew a foot

As the time draws nearer to February16th, I get the memories of my mothers last day’s flooding back to me. The feelings take over when I look back. Terror, fear, indescribable broken heartedness, & sadness.

I used to always think that once I lived through my husband’s drug addiction that I was a rock, and nothing would ever break me again. I lived those days knowing every one of them that I was wrong.

I imagine that this experience is a lot like what P.T.S.D. must feel like. Being brought back to those memories like this takes a grip on my heart and makes me grow so quiet. The deep desperation of the situation makes me feel sick.

My mind plays back the days like movies.

  • The minute I took my mothers hand alone in the ICU on that first Sunday with the uncertainty again of her survival heavy on my mind.

  • Watching her sing Nancy Wilson in the dark, with my sister once out of the ICU.

  • Staying up all night talking about nothing, about everything.

  • Holding her hand in those final 2 days and silently praying for peace for her, for ourselves. We were so broken.

  • The day I left the hospital for the last time with tears streaming down my face.

  • Her memorial on the beach.

  • All the places I have been, this year. I carried my mother in my heart like a weight of devastation that I could not let go.

In the beginning I was so angry at myself for carrying this pain so heavy on my heart with me day in and day out; my own personal little rain cloud, even on the sunny days to remind me of my mother’s absence. I felt I should be stronger, I was disappointed in myself.

It was not until September that I realized I did not have to be angry at myself anymore, and that it was ok to let a little of that pain go, it didn’t mean I was forgetting her. I also realized it was ok to feel however I was going to feel in any given moment; that it did not mean I was not strong.

Once I got that clarity, I was really able to live my life. I got through my birthday, and the holiday’s far better then I ever anticipated. It was only in the late nights in December that I had difficulty sleeping, so I stayed up, baked and listened to music . I felt like she was there; like it was our time to be together.

Trying to pull myself from the past, I instead now try to divert my attention to the strides I really have made this year as a person, to the total and complete experience, recognizing how far I have come.

On the other side of the worst part of the grief, I got to see where I was going as a person, and how far I had come in these 12 months.
I stopped chasing the need to find proof of my mom’s existence in every experience, and instead, I just experienced my life.

Looking back now, I think my mom’s greatest gift is this enormous period of growth that the last days of her life, and her passing has forced on me.

I may not be a million dollars richer, or even look like I am much different on the outside, but I know I am. I know I am growing, & I am grateful everyday that I am. I see amazing possibilities for me on the horizon, and I welcome them.
I am still human and still have my times of sadness (like right now) but, I know that I am ok, & my mom is with me wherever I am.

Looking back on myself at this time last year & to who I am now, I am so proud. The path to being grateful for the lessons that the most devastating experience of my life has given me has finally come full circle.

Confession

In the last few weeks, I have done an excellent job of striving to be awake in my life. To be cause in the matter, vs order in the chaos.

What I have found, is I have done a damn good job of stumbling around half awake; all the while I am telling myself quietly that different results call for different actions.

The devil on my other shoulder is whispering back, “we have time, we have time.”

I cannot pin point how or why, but today I discovered this is the same bitch I listen to every year. Then half a year goes by, and still the same results…. Then the rest of the year goes by, and I end up shrugging off my failures and making a new yet familiar list of to do’s.

I am here to proudly declare that shit ends TODAY.

I am my own worst enemy when it comes to my own progression. I listen too much to the settler side of the voices in my head. She tells me this is good enough, tells me I can’t.
She tells me I am not smart enough, I’m too old, no one cares about me, I am too stupid…. That voice has so much to say.

I have spent the last year and a half in all out war with this bitch inside my head, and I realize that I cannot win the war against her because declaring to myself and once in a while a few close people to me what I am working on, what I dream about, or what I want is not enough to get me far.

Eventually I end up laying down my weapons and befriending the bitch on my shoulder again.

I don’t have any time; all I have is now…. And if you are reading this; please know this is the ultimate act of bravery for me; and that I need you to keep me accountable, to keep me in line so that I do not cave and become my own greatest enemy.

Here is what I want to accomplish – this is what I want to be…. (all the while trying hard to stay unattached to the results)

  • Smile in the face of fear, and do the things that scare the shit out of me, which include:
-        Getting my pro blog up and running
-         Changing jobs even if it is temporary – I need to push myself outside my comfort zone.
-        LOOSE 50 pounds, not because I want to be a model, but because I want to live for a very long time, and do things without physical set backs.

  • Meditate daily
  • Write regularly, my blog, maybe a book, whatever I feel
  • Read more books
  • GO TO SCHOOL. I want to live in a different way. I want to help others.
  • Take an art class, I want to draw, and paint again, I miss that part of me
  • Travel. I have so much to see.
  • Believe I can.

All of this list might seem really superficial and trivial to you The gods honest truth is every second I am writing this confession the looking good part of my brain fears someone will view me to be totally self involved like Hannah from Girls…

The half empty awake side of my brain that is forcing the hand that writes this post says…. “well who isn’t?”

So I guess there is nothing left to do but ask for help. I am a person who obviously needs a village to believe in myself, if you think you belong in that group, don’t waste time sign your ass up…. I need you.
